After a recent homicide committed by an undocumented immigrant, the Democratic governor of the suburban county encountered criticism during his news conference. He was accused by attendees of misrepresenting about the sanctuary immigration practices in the region, which had terrible results.
In the little over 120,000-person Athens-Clarke County, 22-year-old Laken Hope Riley, a medical student at the University of Georgia, was sadly killed. After being detained, Jose Antonio Ibarra, a Venezuelan illegal immigrant, was accused of killing her. Mayor Kelly Girtz defended the government’s policies during a press conference on Tuesday, saying there was no link between them and Ibarra looking for refuge in the region.

Girtz had a minute to introduce himself before speaking about sanctuary cities, using the phrase “means different things to different people depending on the discussion” prior to the citizens of Athens-Clark County having their say.
“We know what it means!” said a man situated behind the camera.

“Liar!” exclaims a lady shortly before a chorus of in agreement muffles Girtz’s counterargument.
“We are here to listen and there will be time for questions,” he replies.
“You are guilty and you’ve got blood on your hands for this murder, sir!” The same protester yells.
