A tiny handful of far-left disruptors created havoc at the city’s Celebration of Freedom event by using airhorns and a bullhorn to cut off speakers. Surprisingly, one of the six agitators even went on to burn an American flag on fire in a shocking act. Ford Fischer of News2Share was there to record this horrible occurrence.
The group pleaded with the crowd to join them in their quest for a “real revolution.”
After their performance, the group was temporarily held by the police, but they were eventually let go. Flag burning is a sanctioned method of protest that is authorized by law. The tote bag caught fire as a result of the flames, giving the group a warning.
On June 21, 1989, the Supreme Court handed down a significant ruling that established the legitimacy of burning the American flag in an act of protest. Gregory Lee Johnson, the protester who burned the American flag, won the Texas v. Johnson case, which stirred controversy throughout the country, by a razor-thin margin of 5 to 4.
Justice Anthony Kennedy, Justice Thurgood Marshall, Justice Harry Blackmun, and Justice Antonin Scalia concurred in the majority opinion written by Justice William Brennan.
