UC Berkeley Breach? Chinese Firm Gets AI Vehicle Access

A controversial partnership between a Chinese tech firm and one of America’s top universities is raising fresh alarms about national security, data privacy, and the future of artificial intelligence on U.S. soil.

At the center of the storm is University of California, Berkeley, which has entered into a cooperation agreement with Dreame Technology, a fast-growing Chinese company best known for making vacuum cleaners and hair styling products. What sounds like a routine academic collaboration is quickly becoming something much bigger and far more concerning.

According to announcements made on April 23, the two sides are now working together to develop advanced AI systems designed to control autonomous vehicles. This includes everything from perception and decision-making to the mechanics of driving itself. In simple terms, they are building the “brain” of future cars.

Dreame executive Jake Ma did not mince words about the company’s ambitions. “We aren’t building a car. We are building a new brain for the physical world.” He went even further, describing vehicles as “the only physical mothership capable” of supporting the massive computing demands of modern AI systems.
