President Donald Trump has announced plans for a massive new steel complex in Iowa, with a price tag of roughly $15 billion and a production target that could make the facility the largest steel plant in the United States.
The project, being developed by Mesabi Metallics, was unveiled Monday at the White House as Trump continues his push to expand American manufacturing and increase domestic production of strategically important materials. The facility is planned for eastern Iowa’s Lee County and is expected to begin producing steel in 2030.
The White House has described the project as the first new U.S. “mega-steel” facility of its kind since the 1960s. Once fully operational, the complex is expected to have the capacity to produce approximately 10 million tons of steel annually. Its initial phase is projected to produce about 7.5 million tons per year.
Those numbers would put the operation among the biggest steel-producing facilities in the country.
