Republicans have long criticized TPS, arguing it has been manipulated to grant de facto amnesty. The Biden administration applied the designation to migrants from 17 different countries, a move that immigration hawks say encouraged mass illegal entry into the United States.
“Biden and Mayorkas attempted to tie the hands of the Trump administration by extending Haiti’s Temporary Protected Status by 18 months—far longer than justified or necessary,” a DHS spokesperson said. “We are returning integrity to the TPS system, which has been abused and exploited by illegal aliens for decades. President Trump and Secretary Noem are returning TPS to its original status: temporary.”
The issue of TPS has become a flashpoint in the immigration debate, particularly in Springfield, Ohio, where an influx of Haitian migrants has upended the local community. The small town of 40,000 was flooded with over 20,000 migrants under Biden’s policies, overwhelming schools, hospitals, and social services.
“We’ve got an influx of folks that have come in, and I think we were a little bit shocked that it was close to 20,000 people in a community of 60,000, and that’s caused some issues between the folks that live here and the folks that are coming in,” former Republican state Rep. Kyle Koehler said in July.
Beyond social strain, Springfield residents have raised alarm over public safety. Reports have surfaced of missing pets and wild animals being slaughtered, though mainstream media outlets have dismissed these claims. Concerns over road safety have also skyrocketed, with residents pointing to an alarming surge in severe car accidents involving migrants with little to no driving experience.
“We do have a really abnormal number of car accidents that are happening,” Koehler noted. “And it’s not only the number but the severity of them. When you go on a street that is a 35-mile-an-hour speed limit, and there’s a car sitting on its hood, and I’m not talking about one, I’m talking about five or six accidents a week like that, you begin to wonder.”
One of the most tragic incidents involved an 11-year-old boy, Aiden Clark, who was killed when a school bus collided with a van. The bus was being driven by Hermanio Joseph, a Haitian migrant who lacked a valid driver’s license.
This latest move follows Noem’s previous rollback of TPS extensions for Venezuelan migrants, impacting over 300,000 people. The Trump administration has aggressively dismantled Biden’s lenient immigration policies, including the widely criticized “catch and release” program, which allowed asylum seekers to enter the U.S. and disappear into the interior, often never appearing for their court hearings.

Republicans have long argued that Biden’s handling of asylum claims violated international law, which mandates that migrants apply for asylum in the first safe country they enter. Instead, the U.S. southern border saw an influx of migrants from across the world, many of whom bypassed multiple nations to claim asylum in America.
With Trump back in office, his administration is making good on promises to restore border security and end what many conservatives see as an era of unchecked illegal immigration. The end of TPS for Haitian nationals is just the latest step in a sweeping effort to bring order back to America’s immigration system.
