The Trump administration’s effort to give states a powerful new way to verify the citizenship status of registered voters has run straight into the federal courts — and the fight has now reached the Supreme Court.
At the center of the dispute is the Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements program, better known as SAVE.
The federal system isn’t new. SAVE has been around for more than two decades and has traditionally helped government agencies determine whether noncitizens meet immigration-status requirements for certain public benefits and licenses.
