President Donald Trump is expressing growing optimism that the United States and Iran may soon reach a major diplomatic breakthrough, one that could strengthen a fragile ceasefire and pave the way for the reopening of the critically important Strait of Hormuz.
In remarks delivered during a phone interview with ABC News chief Washington correspondent Jonathan Karl, Trump projected confidence that negotiations remain alive despite turbulence that briefly threatened to derail progress.
“Looking good, looking good,” Trump said when asked about the status of the discussions.
The president acknowledged that negotiators encountered an unexpected obstacle earlier in the day, but he insisted the setback was short-lived and quickly addressed.
“There was a little glitch today, but I turned that one around very quickly, as you probably noticed earlier,” Trump said.
