Addressing the incident on Truth Social, Trump accused Iran of violating the existing ceasefire arrangement and made clear that the United States would not allow such actions to go unanswered.
“Iran shot at least four One Way Attack Drones at Ships transversing the Strait of Hormuz. … Damage was done but the ship was able to proceed on its way. We knocked down three other drones. Obviously, this is a foolish violation of our Ceasefire Agreement.”
Following the drone attack, U.S. Central Command confirmed that American forces launched strikes targeting Iranian military infrastructure. The command characterized the operation as a direct response to what it called “unwarranted aggression against commercial shipping by Iranian forces” and argued that Iran’s actions represented a clear breach of the ceasefire while threatening freedom of navigation through a critical international trade corridor.
The president later followed up with an even stronger warning, suggesting that Iran risked provoking a much broader military response if attacks continued.
“United States aircraft just struck Iranian missile and drone storage locations, and coastal radar sites, for violating the Cease Fire Agreement, AGAIN,” Trump wrote. “It is very possible that they will never learn! There may come a point when we are no longer able to be reasonable, and will be forced to militarily complete the job that we very successfully started. If that happens, the Islamic Republic of Iran will no longer exist!”
The renewed exchange of military action represents the most serious escalation since the United States and Iran reportedly entered into a 60-day Memorandum of Understanding, commonly referred to as the Islamabad Memorandum, earlier this year. According to the reported framework, both governments agreed to suspend hostilities while working toward a broader and more permanent peace agreement, with the United States also lifting its naval blockade of Iranian ports on June 18.
Despite those reported commitments, tensions now appear to be rising rapidly as both sides accuse the other of violating the agreement. The latest strikes have fueled concerns that the fragile truce could unravel if additional military action follows.
Iran has reportedly responded by carrying out retaliatory operations targeting U.S. positions in Bahrain and Kuwait after the American strikes. Officials on both sides continue to defend their actions while accusing the other of failing to honor previous commitments.
As the situation continues to evolve, the outlook remains uncertain. U.S. Central Command has not yet released a detailed assessment of the damage inflicted during the strikes, while Iranian officials have condemned the American operation as a violation of ongoing diplomatic understandings. Whether the reported ceasefire can survive this latest confrontation remains an open question, but Saturday’s developments signal that tensions between Washington and Tehran have once again reached a dangerous level.
