A top Chicago Democrat has stunned his own party by publicly siding with President Donald Trump over the federal government’s recent deployment of personnel to restore law and order in the Windy City.
Ray Lopez, the Democratic alderman representing Chicago’s 15th Ward, told Fox News that he not only supports Trump’s move but says a large share of Chicago residents feel the same way. His comments come as city and state leaders, including Democrat Mayor Brandon Johnson and Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, have accused the administration of “declaring war” on Chicago.
When asked whether his community agrees with the mayor and governor, Lopez didn’t mince words.
“Absolutely not. There are many people in the city of Chicago who completely support having the additional resources to keep both ICE agents and community protesters safe,” Lopez said.
Lopez went further, directly criticizing state and local officials for turning their backs on law enforcement at a critical moment.
“What we have seen is a complete abdication of responsibility, both by Governor Pritzker and by the mayor of the city of Chicago, who have refused up until this point to allow police just to maintain the peace for protesters and for ICE agents doing their job. We need to bring some sanity back to the conversation, and a majority of Chicagoans want to see that happen,” he added.
