A dangerous escalation in the Persian Gulf triggered a swift and overwhelming response from the United States this week after Iranian forces allegedly attacked commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz. According to U.S. officials, President Donald Trump ordered American forces to strike Iranian mine-laying vessels after several cargo ships were set ablaze in one of the world’s most critical shipping lanes.
Within hours of the attacks, U.S. Central Command launched a major operation targeting Iranian naval assets believed to be preparing to deploy sea mines across the narrow channel that carries a massive share of the world’s oil supply.
Trump later confirmed that the strikes were extensive.
“They started talking about mines, so we hit 28 mine-ships as of this moment,” he said outside the White House.
The rapid response underscores how seriously Washington is treating threats to the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic choke point through which roughly one-fifth of the planet’s daily oil production travels.
