In a dramatic turn of events ahead of Pope Francis’ funeral, President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met privately in Rome, holding what White House communications director Steven Cheung described as a “very productive discussion.”
The face-to-face conversation, conducted inside the iconic St. Peter’s Basilica, marked the first time the two leaders had met since their explosive Oval Office meeting just two months ago. Cheung noted that “additional details about the meeting would be forthcoming.”

Photos released by Zelensky’s office captured the two men engaged in deep, one-on-one talks, without aides, within the majestic Vatican setting. Zelensky took to social media, declaring, “Good meeting. We discussed a lot one on one. Hoping for results on everything we covered.”
Zelensky continued, emphasizing the high stakes: “Protecting lives of our people. Full and unconditional ceasefire. Reliable and lasting peace that will prevent another war from breaking out. Very symbolic meeting that has potential to become historic, if we achieve joint results.”
