Senate Republicans are once again facing internal tensions over election security legislation as Senate Majority Leader John Thune pushes back against calls from Donald Trump and his allies to change Senate rules in order to advance the SAVE America Act.
The clash highlights a growing divide within the GOP over how aggressively to pursue major legislative priorities—particularly those championed by Trump and the America First movement.
Thune Rejects Rule Changes to Advance SAVE America Act
During a recent interview with ABC News, Thune made it clear that altering Senate rules to push the legislation through the chamber is not something he plans to pursue.
“Yeah, that’s not going to happen,” Thune said on Monday when asked directly whether the Senate might modify the chamber’s 60-vote threshold in order to move the bill forward.
The legislation, known as the SAVE America Act, is being promoted by Trump and his supporters as a major step toward tightening election safeguards nationwide. Advocates say the bill would strengthen voter integrity measures and ensure that only U.S. citizens participate in federal elections.
