The allegations are not entirely new. Similar questions about the spending had previously been reviewed during a separate congressional ethics investigation before the matter reportedly drew the attention of federal investigators.
Federal campaign finance records reviewed by Politico also revealed a series of expenditures made by Gallego’s campaign committee and his leadership PAC. Those filings showed that since 2019, more than $18,000 was reimbursed for child care expenses. The reimbursements included payments made to an au pair service as well as a $400 payment to Gallego’s mother-in-law for babysitting during a campaign fundraiser.
Additional records outlined spending connected to family travel through Gallego’s leadership PAC. Among the expenses was more than $9,000 for a Miami Beach hotel stay tied to a birthday celebration that also included political events. Another trip to Chicago reportedly involved nearly $1,500 in hotel costs connected to a fundraiser. The PAC also paid for meals and lodging during visits to Disneyland and Disney World totaling nearly $1,500, not including airfare.
Reports indicate that several family members—including Gallego’s wife, Sydney, their children, and the family’s au pair—participated in multiple trips financed through political committees. Records also show that a joint fundraising committee with former Rep. Eric Swalwell covered expenses related to the 2023 Super Bowl in Arizona, including tickets to the event and a pre-game brunch.
Gallego has strongly defended the spending, insisting it falls within federal election guidelines. Responding to the reporting, the Arizona senator argued that travel involving family members during campaign and fundraising events is permitted under Federal Election Commission regulations and is routinely done by lawmakers from both political parties. He also pointed to the growing financial burden of child care as part of the explanation.
A spokesperson for the senator similarly defended the expenditures. The office characterized the Miami trip as part of a broader fundraising and political tour with multiple stops, while describing the Chicago visit as including both fundraising activities and attendance at political events.
Gallego’s leadership PAC, Juntos PAC, was established in February 2024 and has reportedly raised nearly $1.5 million. More than half of those contributions have come from corporate political action committees. Unlike a candidate’s principal campaign committee, leadership PACs operate under different regulations that provide greater flexibility for spending tied to fundraising efforts.
As questions surrounding the investigation intensified, Gallego’s office also confirmed that the senator established a legal defense fund last month, a move that has drawn additional attention as the federal probe moves forward.
The Justice Department investigation comes shortly after the Senate Select Committee on Ethics concluded its own review of the allegations. In a letter dated June 26, 2026, the committee informed Gallego that it “did not find evidence that your actions violated Federal law, Senate Rules or related standards of conduct.”
That ethics review began after Rep. Anna Paulina Luna (R-Fla.) filed a complaint in April alleging campaign finance violations along with accusations of inappropriate conduct of a sexual nature. Although the Senate committee closed its inquiry without finding wrongdoing, the reported federal investigation appears to be proceeding separately.
Gallego has quickly become one of the Democratic Party’s most closely watched rising figures since taking office as Arizona’s junior senator in January 2025 after defeating Republican Kari Lake in the 2024 election. Political observers have increasingly mentioned him as a possible contender for the Democratic presidential nomination in 2028.
Those rumors only intensified earlier this year when Gallego hired former Biden White House deputy press secretary Andrew Bates to oversee communications. While no presidential campaign has been announced, the move fueled additional speculation about the senator’s long-term political ambitions even as he now faces renewed legal and political scrutiny.
