Fresh scrutiny is surrounding Sen. Ruben Gallego (D-Ariz.) after reports emerged that the U.S. Department of Justice has opened an investigation into his campaign finances over allegations involving the use of political funds for personal and family-related expenses.
According to reports, the federal inquiry was launched following a whistleblower complaint submitted out of Southern California. Investigators are reportedly examining whether campaign funds and political action committee money were used in ways that violated federal campaign finance laws.
At the center of the investigation are several trips allegedly financed through Gallego’s political committees. Those expenses reportedly included travel connected to destinations such as Miami, Chicago, Disneyland, and Disney World, where family members accompanied the senator while political events and fundraising activities were also taking place.
