Texas officials have sounded the alarm after uncovering thousands of possible noncitizens registered to vote in the Lone Star State. According to Texas Secretary of State Jane Nelson, a massive cross-check of the state’s voter database revealed more than 2,700 potentially ineligible names — a discovery that’s once again fueling nationwide concerns about voter fraud.
After comparing the state’s 18 million registered voters against the federal SAVE (Systematic Alien Verification for Entitlements) database, authorities identified 2,724 individuals who may not be U.S. citizens but were listed on the official rolls.
“Only eligible United States citizens may participate in our elections,” Nelson said in a statement released on her website.
Nelson credited the Trump administration for providing states with direct access to federal data that helps identify noncitizens attempting to vote. “The Trump Administration’s decision to give states free and direct access to this data set for the first time has been a game changer, and we appreciate the partnership with the federal government to verify the citizenship of those on our voter rolls and maintain accurate voter lists,” she added.
