They’re Doing WHAT With NYC Monuments?

The New York City Council is debating a comprehensive package of policies intended to assist and elevate black citizens. This include looking into reparations and pushing for the removal of monuments and works of art that uphold racist ideology. These recommendations are intended to advance equity and justice for all New Yorkers.

Councilwoman Farah Louis, a Democrat from Brooklyn, introduced a reparations measure on Thursday with the intention of redressing previous wrongs.

A similar proposal was submitted on the same day that the New York Legislature passed a law creating a committee to look into the negative effects of slavery and racial discrimination in the state and assess potential monetary reparations. The same important issue is the focus of this proposal.

Many states have formed analogous commissions, including California.

Louis is putting out a special law for New York City that calls for the formation of a task committee of nine people. After a year, the task force would be required to present a report evaluating the situation. The commission’s recommendations would not be legally binding, much like the Albany law.

In order to address historical wrongs, Louis is putting out a set of laws. This idea was presented on Thursday as a component of a bigger corrective action initiative.

Crystal Hudson, a Democrat from Brooklyn, has submitted a bill that advocates for the creation of a “Truth, Healing, and Reconciliation” mechanism. This project would charge New York City’s Commission on Racial Equity with investigating the city’s historical usage of slavery. The ultimate objective is to unearth “historical facts” and offer suggestions for local organizations and government on how to prevent such incidents from happening again. This significant development has been covered in The New York Post.

A new proposal requires the city’s Public Design Commission to develop a comprehensive plan to remove memorials and works of art that memorialize those who unjustly benefited from slavery or engaged in systemic crimes against indigenous people.

Following the “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville in 2017, former mayor Bill de Blasio created a commission to examine monuments all throughout the city. The board approved the removal of one statue following careful consideration.
