A dangerous encounter in the skies over Washington, D.C., is raising fresh concerns about the military’s judgment — and once again, civilians were put at risk. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has launched an investigation after an Army Black Hawk helicopter forced two commercial jets to abort their landings at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport on Thursday.

The FAA sent out a formal notice about the alarming event on Friday, as first reported by Politico. It’s a chilling reminder of a similar tragedy just three months ago when an Army helicopter and a passenger jet collided over the Potomac River, claiming 67 lives.

According to Chris Senn, the FAA’s assistant administrator for government and industry affairs, the Army Black Hawk decided to “take a scenic route around the Pentagon versus proceeding directly from the west to the heliport.” That detour caused two commercial planes to execute emergency go-arounds rather than land, a serious breach of air traffic protocols.
