Sheriff Grady Judd’s Arrest Sparks National Attention Overnight

Florida law enforcement is once again highlighting a sharp contrast between the state’s immigration enforcement approach and that of sanctuary jurisdictions, after a drunk-driving illegal alien was arrested, charged, and immediately escalated into felony territory under a state law designed to enhance penalties for those in the country unlawfully.

The latest case out of Polk County involves a 34-year-old Nicaraguan national, Roberto Sandobal-Lopez, who deputies say drove drunk, crashed into a fence, and attempted to flee the scene—only to be tracked down and arrested shortly after.

According to authorities, Sandobal-Lopez was operating a vehicle in Winter Haven on Saturday evening when he lost control and slammed into a fence along Spirit Lake Road. Deputies later determined he had a blood alcohol content of 0.13—nearly twice Florida’s legal limit. Witnesses contacted law enforcement after the crash, reporting that the driver had fled the scene.

When Polk County deputies located him, they described clear signs of intoxication, including watery eyes and a strong odor of alcohol. Sandobal-Lopez allegedly admitted to consuming multiple beers before getting behind the wheel and did not possess a valid driver’s license.
