Schumer Caught Off Guard on Voter ID

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer found himself on the defensive this weekend after being confronted with a political reality Democrats have struggled to explain away: Americans overwhelmingly support voter ID.

During an appearance on State of the Union with host Jake Tapper, Schumer was pressed about polling that shows broad bipartisan backing for identification requirements at the ballot box. Instead of offering a clear rebuttal, the New York Democrat launched into a winding response that critics say only underscored how uncomfortable the issue has become for his party.

Tapper cut straight to the numbers.

“About 83 percent of the American people, including majority Democrats, support voter ID laws,” the host noted.

Schumer did not dispute the statistic. Instead, he pivoted.

“Well, yeah, the voter ID laws that, first, each state can have its own voter ID laws, and some do and some don’t,” Schumer responded.
