SAVE Act CRASHES in Senate Vote

A dramatic early morning clash in the Senate exposed deep fractures within the Republican Party, as a key election integrity proposal tied to President Donald Trump failed to advance during a high-stakes funding debate for the Department of Homeland Security.

In a move that stunned many conservatives, several Republican senators broke ranks and joined Democrats to block an amendment that would have incorporated elements of the SAVE America Act into a broader DHS funding package. The vote ended 48 to 50, effectively halting momentum behind one of Trump’s most aggressively promoted election reform efforts.

The Republicans who opposed the amendment included Thom Tillis, Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, and Mitch McConnell. Their decision to side with Democrats dealt a serious blow to GOP leadership efforts to unify behind stricter federal election standards.

The vote unfolded during the Senate’s marathon “vote-a-rama,” a chaotic legislative process that allows lawmakers to introduce and vote on a wide range of amendments with little restriction. While Republicans had hoped to leverage the moment to push election reforms, the lack of internal consensus quickly became evident.
