The Republican establishment’s ongoing feud with Donald Trump has claimed yet another victim. This time, Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA), a so-called Republican in Name Only (RINO), is in the spotlight for his controversial decision to vote to convict Trump during the January 6 impeachment trial. That vote is now coming back to haunt him, as he faces a formidable challenger in Louisiana Treasurer John Fleming.
The number of Republican Senators who voted to convict Trump over what many conservatives dub the “January 6 hoax” is shrinking. Of the original seven, only three remain in office: Susan Collins (R-ME), Lisa Murkowski (R-AK), and Bill Cassidy. For Cassidy, the fallout has been severe, as his decision alienated a large portion of his Republican base in Louisiana.

Cassidy, who has kept a relatively low profile since his impeachment vote, is now preparing for a re-election battle in the 2026 midterms. But with a strong contender entering the race, Cassidy’s future in the Senate looks uncertain.
