Republican Senator Lisa Murkowski is facing fierce backlash from conservatives after openly declaring she will not support the SAVE America Act, a bill designed to require proof of U.S. citizenship for voter registration.
The Alaska senator stunned many in the Republican base by echoing language commonly used by Democrats, arguing that the legislation would prevent large numbers of Alaskans from voting.
Her remarks came during a tense exchange with Lindell TV reporter Alison Steinberg, who confronted Murkowski earlier this week about where she stands on the legislation.
The bill itself has become a major flashpoint within the GOP. Supporters say the SAVE America Act would strengthen election integrity by ensuring that only U.S. citizens are able to register and vote in federal elections. Critics within the party, however, claim that the implementation could pose challenges in rural states where access to documentation may be more limited.
Murkowski made it clear she has no intention of backing the legislation in its current form.
“Uh, not as it is drafted, no,” Murkowski said when asked directly whether she supports the bill.
Steinberg pressed the senator for an explanation, asking why she would oppose a proposal designed to protect the integrity of American elections.
