The GOP’s response was swift and decisive. Republicans at both the state and national levels filed challenges, pressing Republican Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger and Republican Governor Brian Kemp to intervene. Whatley voiced frustration with what he described as Democratic officials in “blue strongholds… playing fast and loose with Georgia election laws,” and confirmed that the RNC would pursue legal action to address the situation. Within hours, the pressure paid off, and poll watchers were granted entry to the affected locations.

Georgia Republican Party Chairman Josh McKoon took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to confirm the breakthrough, writing, “I have been apprised that after refusing to admit our poll watchers that Fulton County and other counties are now allowing our poll watchers to observe the voting activity occurring today.” However, McKoon noted that the legality of extending the early voting period was still under review, and the GOP’s legal team would evaluate “next steps” regarding the weekend ballot collection activity.
While the legal battle surrounding extended voting hours continues, Whatley expressed relief that Republican observers are now present in ballot-counting areas. “Our lawsuit over the offices remaining open is still pending, but we have eyes in the room as votes are being counted,” Whatley posted. He pledged that the RNC would maintain its “aggressive efforts to enforce Georgia law and protect the vote.”
Republican lawmakers quickly rallied to the scene, with Georgia State Senator Greg Dolezal coordinating with Raffensperger’s office to secure access for poll watchers. Dolezal confirmed that he and two other Senate colleagues were actively monitoring the situation, with Dolezal heading to one of the affected locations personally to “get eyes on the situation.” In another post, he highlighted Fulton County’s need to “be held accountable for once again making up rules as they go.” Dolezal also confirmed that the GOP was “seeking an order to sequester these ballots until their appeal is heard.”
Secretary Raffensperger weighed in on the situation, underscoring the importance of transparency in Fulton County. “The eyes of the world are on Fulton County. Local officials must ensure that every process from now until election day and after is transparent and in accordance with Georgia law, given the history of controversy in the county’s election administration,” he remarked.

The developments come at a pivotal time for the GOP, with Georgia standing as a critical swing state in the upcoming election. In 2020, President Biden narrowly clinched the state by a margin of under 12,000 votes, largely attributed to mail-in ballots from Democratic strongholds. As Georgia’s political climate grows increasingly contentious, Republicans are adamant about ensuring that all votes adhere to state laws to prevent any irregularities.
For now, Republicans celebrate a victory in safeguarding election integrity while remaining vigilant as the legal fight continues over extended ballot collection. The GOP’s win in securing poll watchers sends a message of accountability to officials in Georgia’s most scrutinized counties as election day looms.
