A surprising political clash erupted over the weekend after Republican Sen. Thom Tillis of North Carolina publicly targeted one of President Donald Trump’s most influential White House advisers. In remarks that immediately stirred backlash among conservatives, Tillis demanded that longtime Trump aide Stephen Miller be removed from his position, calling him an “embarrassment” and claiming he has become a “big problem” for the administration.
The comments, delivered during a Sunday appearance on CNN’s State of the Union, marked one of the most direct attacks by a Republican senator against a key figure in Trump’s inner circle. Miller has long been viewed as the architect behind some of the administration’s toughest immigration policies and a driving force behind the president’s push to secure the southern border.
Tillis used the interview to criticize Miller’s influence inside the White House, arguing that the senior adviser wields too much power over administration decisions. The senator linked his criticism to the recent dismissal of Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, suggesting that Miller’s role inside the administration has become excessive.
“It gives me pause that you have people like Stephen Miller calling the shots,” Tillis told host Jake Tapper. “It was Stephen Miller that was talking about a terrorist brandishing a gun. It was Stephen Miller who said it was the position of the United States that we should go after Greenland. It was Stephen Miller who has been repeatedly responsible for embarrassment for the President of the United States by acting too quickly. Speaking first and thinking later.”
