A newly released timeline from Senator Rand Paul is fueling renewed scrutiny over the federal government’s handling of the COVID-19 origins investigation and the influential role played by former White House medical adviser Anthony Fauci throughout the pandemic.
The Kentucky Republican argues that recently uncovered documents reveal a much deeper relationship between Fauci and elements of the U.S. intelligence apparatus than many Americans previously understood. While Fauci has long been known for his leadership at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), Paul contends the records show that the longtime health official was involved in discussions surrounding biodefense, emerging pathogens, and intelligence assessments for decades before COVID-19 emerged.
The controversy comes as questions surrounding the origins of the coronavirus continue to divide Washington, years after the pandemic disrupted lives across the globe and triggered one of the most consequential public health crises in modern history.
According to materials highlighted by Paul, Fauci participated in reviews of national security and biodefense-related matters dating back to the early 2000s. One document reportedly shows Fauci contributing to discussions regarding the national implications of the SARS outbreak in 2003. Additional records indicate that intelligence and defense agencies sought his expertise on biological threats and future risks associated with advances in biotechnology.
