Chaos erupted on the streets of San Francisco Thursday evening after a confrontation near the city’s crime-plagued Tenderloin district turned violent, leaving one police officer injured while protecting the city’s mayor.
According to reports, San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie was traveling through the area shortly before 6 p.m. when the incident unfolded near Cedar Street. What began as a simple attempt to clear the roadway quickly spiraled into a physical struggle that left one officer bloodied and scrambling to regain control of the situation.
The dramatic clash is drawing renewed attention to the dangerous street conditions surrounding the Tenderloin area, long criticized by residents and law enforcement as one of the city’s most volatile neighborhoods.
Street Confrontation Turns Violent
The mayor was riding in a black SUV accompanied by members of his security detail when the vehicle was reportedly blocked by three individuals standing in the street.
According to the injured officer’s account to responding police, Mayor Lurie stepped out of the vehicle and politely asked the group to move so the SUV could pass.
