When the officer intervened and instructed the man to move along, the suspect initially appeared to back away. But seconds later, the encounter exploded into violence.
Officer Knocked to the Ground
Without warning, the man suddenly rushed toward the officer assigned to protect the mayor.
The officer attempted to restrain him by grabbing his upper body, but the struggle quickly spun out of control. Both men crashed to the ground during the confrontation.
The officer fell backward and struck his head on the pavement, leaving him bleeding from the back of the head while still trying to regain control of the suspect.

Meanwhile, the mayor’s driver, who is also a police officer, was dealing with another individual at the scene as the confrontation unfolded.
Authorities later confirmed that the second officer did not appear to suffer injuries, though investigators are still working to determine exactly what role the other individuals played during the incident.
Suspects Taken Into Custody
Police quickly moved in to restore order after the violent scuffle.
The suspected attacker was subdued and placed in handcuffs at the scene. As officers secured him, the man reportedly continued shouting profanity at law enforcement.
Witnesses reported the suspect repeatedly yelling, “F–k you!” while officers detained him.
A second suspect attempted to flee the scene but was quickly chased down and captured a short distance away.
Within minutes, more than a dozen San Francisco Police Department officers had flooded the area, surrounding the suspects as they lay handcuffed on the pavement.
Mayor Watches Aftermath
Mayor Lurie was not physically injured during the confrontation but remained nearby as police secured the area and tended to the wounded officer.
Observers reported that the mayor appeared visibly shaken after witnessing the violent encounter unfold in front of him.
Speaking to Mission Local following the incident, Lurie briefly described what happened but declined to elaborate on the details.
“The men had attempted to fight a police officer,” the mayor said.
Police Confirm Injuries
The San Francisco Police Department later confirmed the details of the incident in an official statement.
Officers responded to the intersection of Cedar and Polk streets at approximately 5:38 p.m., where two suspects were arrested following the confrontation.
Authorities said two officers assigned to the mayor’s protective detail suffered injuries during the encounter. Fortunately, officials noted that the injuries were not considered life-threatening.
Police Union Praises Officers
The leadership of the San Francisco Police Officers Association quickly spoke out in support of the officers involved in the incident.
Louis Wong, the organization’s president, praised the quick response and bravery of the officers who stepped in to protect the mayor.
“We’re grateful the officers assigned to the mayor’s security detail acted swiftly and courageously to protect him in a dangerous and unpredictable situation,” Wong said.
“We wish our injured officer a full and speedy recovery and commend all involved for their bravery and decisive actions.”

The violent confrontation near the Tenderloin once again highlights the ongoing security concerns surrounding one of San Francisco’s most troubled districts.
The neighborhood has long been associated with open drug use, street crime, and unpredictable confrontations, leading many residents and local officials to warn that the situation has spiraled out of control in recent years.
