Republicans in Oregon believe the political winds may finally be shifting after years of Democrat dominance, and Tuesday night delivered a major moment for the GOP’s hopes of reclaiming the governor’s mansion for the first time in more than four decades.
Former Oregon House Minority Leader Christine Drazan emerged victorious in a crowded Republican primary field, securing the nomination to challenge Democrat Governor Tina Kotek this November in what conservatives are already calling one of the state’s most important elections in years.
Drazan entered the race with strong name recognition after narrowly losing to Kotek during the 2022 governor’s race. That close contest energized Republicans who believe mounting frustration over rising crime, homelessness, drug abuse, and soaring living expenses could finally weaken Democrats’ decades-long grip on Oregon politics.
