The joke was a reference to Fauci’s contentious Senate testimony, where he repeatedly declined to answer questions from lawmakers after invoking his Fifth Amendment rights.
Fauci appeared before lawmakers after being subpoenaed by Sen. Rand Paul as part of a Republican-led investigation examining his conduct during the COVID-19 pandemic. The hearing touched on several politically explosive issues, including the origins of the virus, gain-of-function research and Fauci’s handling of the pandemic response.
Lawmakers also questioned Fauci about thousands of pages of personal diaries that have recently been released.
Rather than answer some of the questions, Fauci said he was relying on the advice of his attorneys in invoking his constitutional right against self-incrimination. He also accused Paul of having an “obvious obsession” with prosecuting him.
That testimony generated significant attention in Washington, making Fangio’s reference instantly recognizable to anyone who had followed the hearing.
The Eagles coach, however, did not linger on politics. His comment came at the beginning of a media session focused primarily on Philadelphia’s upcoming football season and the challenge of maintaining one of the NFL’s strongest defensive units.
Fangio has plenty to be confident about.
Philadelphia’s defense was a major factor in the team’s championship-winning 2025 campaign. The Eagles consistently ranked among the league’s best defensive teams, limiting opponents in multiple areas while putting tremendous pressure on opposing quarterbacks.
The unit’s ability to rush the passer, disrupt opposing offenses and create difficult situations helped Philadelphia establish itself as one of the NFL’s most formidable teams.
Fangio has played a significant role in that transformation.
A longtime defensive innovator, Fangio arrived in Philadelphia before the 2024 season after coaching defensive units with several NFL organizations, including the Denver Broncos, Miami Dolphins, Chicago Bears and San Francisco 49ers.
Over the course of his career, he has earned a reputation as one of football’s most respected defensive strategists. His schemes are known for creating confusion for opposing quarterbacks while allowing his defenders to attack from multiple angles.
In Philadelphia, that approach helped produce a defense capable of controlling games.
The Eagles’ success during their Super Bowl run was not simply the result of an explosive offense. Their defense repeatedly gave the team opportunities to win, especially when opposing offenses struggled to deal with Philadelphia’s pass rush.
That makes Fangio’s role particularly important heading into another season.

For Fangio, Thursday’s media session was ultimately about those football matters.
Still, his opening reference to Fauci may have been the moment reporters remembered most.
The comment was brief, sarcastic and completely unexpected. It also demonstrated how quickly a major political controversy can spill beyond Washington and into completely different corners of American life.
Fangio made his joke, received the expected reaction and then moved on to the business of preparing the Eagles for another NFL season.
But for a few moments, the defensive coordinator traded X’s and O’s for a jab at one of the country’s most recognizable public-health officials.
And judging by the laughter in the room, the reporters were more than happy to hear it.
