In a highly unusual move, former President Barack Obama broke his silence Tuesday night to defend himself after Donald Trump leveled a bombshell accusation — that Obama was the mastermind behind the now-discredited Trump–Russia collusion hoax. Trump didn’t hold back, demanding a full criminal investigation and calling the entire saga a “scam” orchestrated at the highest levels of government.
Earlier in the day, Trump accused Obama of being the “ringleader” behind the witch hunt, pointing to newly declassified files that suggest top Obama officials cooked up the Russia narrative to undermine Trump’s presidency before it even began.
Trying to distance his former boss from the growing scandal, Obama spokesman Patrick Rodenbush issued a rare and defensive public statement. “Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response,” Rodenbush said. “But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one.”
He didn’t stop there, labeling Trump’s accusations as nothing more than a political smokescreen. “These bizarre allegations are ridiculous and a weak attempt at distraction,” he continued. “Nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election but did not successfully manipulate any votes.”
