New Twist in Canada Mass Shooting Case

>> Continued From the Previous Page <<

The carnage extended beyond the school walls. Six victims were discovered inside Tumbler Ridge Secondary School. A seventh victim died while being transported to the hospital. In a chilling twist, two additional bodies were located at a separate residence believed to be connected to the attack. Reports indicate that the shooter’s mother may have been among those killed at that home.

The scale of the tragedy stunned provincial leaders.

“It’s hard to know what to say on a night like tonight. It’s the kind of thing that feels like it happens in other places and not close to home,” said British Columbia Premier David Eby, as per the U.K. Guardian.

Local officials echoed the shock and grief that gripped the tight-knit community.

The District of Tumbler Ridge described the incident as “deeply distressing” and acknowledged “that many residents may be feeling shocked, scared and overwhelmed.”

“In the days ahead, we know this will be difficult for many to process. Please check in on one another, lean on available supports, and know that Tumbler Ridge is a strong and caring community.”

Despite the magnitude of the attack, official information was slow to come. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) confirmed they had identified the sole suspect and had linked the two deaths at the residence to the same individual. However, authorities withheld the shooter’s name for hours following the incident.

In the initial active shooter alert, police described the suspect as a “female in a dress with brown hair.”

Yet during a later press conference, RCMP Superintendent Ken Floyd referred to the suspect as a “deceased gunperson,” terminology that quickly raised eyebrows online and fueled speculation about the shooter’s identity.

Even as late as 1 a.m. local time, law enforcement declined to provide further identifying details. RCMP Staff Sgt. Kris Clark told the CBC he didn’t “have any details on the identity or the age or any of that information of the suspect at this time.”

Juno News, however, moved forward with its reporting, citing direct confirmation from Russell G. Strang. The outlet stated: “Juno News reviewed social media and online accounts connected to Jesse Strang following confirmation from his uncle.”

Online traces appear to show a complicated digital footprint.

In a Facebook post dated July 6, 2021, Jennifer Strang — believed to be the suspect’s mother — promoted her son’s YouTube presence, writing:

“Check out my oldest son Jesse Strang YouTube channel. He posts about hunting, self reliance, guns and stuff he likes to do. Subscribe and you’ll get notifications when he posts new videos. he doesn’t go on much other social media so this is his way of sharing his life,” the post reads.

Public records indicate the YouTube channel was originally created under the name “jesseboy347 strang” on Nov. 25, 2018. It was later renamed “JessJessUwU.” The updated account reportedly listed pronouns as she/her, suggesting that Strang later identified as transgender.

The profile image reportedly featured an anime-style character set against a transgender pride flag, alongside what appeared to be an SKS rifle.

The term “UwU,” commonly used in certain online subcultures, is often associated with anime and “furry” communities. That subculture centers around an interest in anthropomorphic animal characters, sometimes expressed through online personas and fandom spaces.

At the time Juno News reviewed the account, only one post remained publicly visible. It read: “I’ve been pretty um, aimless.”

If the reporting is confirmed, this would mark yet another deeply troubling case involving a transgender-identifying school shooter in North America in recent years.

In March 2023, Audrey Hale — a biological female who identified as male and used the name Aiden Hale — murdered six people at The Covenant School in Nashville before taking her own life. In August 2025, two children were killed during a shooting inside Annunciation Catholic Church in Minneapolis. Authorities identified the suspect in that case as Robert Westman, a transgender-identifying male who had legally changed his name to Robin.

A 2025 review conducted by The Western Journal in the aftermath of the Minneapolis attack found that approximately 40 percent of planned or executed mass school shootings since 2020 involved transgender-identifying suspects.

As investigators continue piecing together what happened in Tumbler Ridge, grieving families are left searching for answers — and Canadians are once again confronting uncomfortable questions about warning signs, transparency, and the factors driving acts of mass violence.

For the small town now forever changed, the road to healing will be long.
