Robert Swan Mueller III, the former FBI director and special counsel whose investigation into alleged Russian interference dominated the early years of Donald Trump’s presidency, has died at the age of 81.
According to multiple individuals familiar with the situation, Mueller passed away on Friday. The exact cause of death has not yet been publicly confirmed.
However, those close to the situation indicated that Mueller had been battling Parkinson’s disease for several years, a condition that had significantly affected his health and public appearances in recent times.
A Central Figure in One of Washington’s Most Controversial Investigations
Mueller became a household name after being appointed special counsel in 2017, following the firing of FBI Director James Comey by then-President Donald Trump.
His task was to oversee the federal investigation into alleged Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election, as well as any potential links to the Trump campaign.
