Despite his arrest, Spell wasted little time returning to the pulpit after posting bond. During his first church service following his release, he addressed the incident in front of his congregation and drew applause after referencing Scripture in describing what had happened.
“In my name, they shall lay hands on the sick. And they shall recover. So today, I fulfilled the scripture. I laid hands on the sick. I don’t know how much recovery they’re going to have, but I laid hands on the sick,” Pastor Spell said from the pulpit to applause.
The pastor also recounted the disturbing statements he says were made moments before the fight erupted. Speaking to church members, Spell alleged the neighbor issued explicit threats against his family.
Pastor Spell said the neighbor told him, “I’m going to rape your wife. I’m going to rape your children, and the next time you’re out of town, I’m going to kill them. Now what are you going to do about it?”
Members of Life Tabernacle Church have also accused the same neighbor of repeatedly harassing worshippers over an extended period. According to congregants, the individual frequently shouted insults at churchgoers and allegedly directed racial slurs toward members of the congregation.
Questions remain about the history of complaints involving the two sides. According to a source within the Central Police Department, authorities have not fully investigated all of the claims raised by Pastor Spell. Sources also indicated that police records show only one documented incident report involving Spell’s family and the neighboring resident.
When addressing his congregation after being released from East Baton Rouge Parish Prison, Spell characterized the confrontation as an example of what he described as “domestic terrorism,” arguing that his family had been subjected to repeated intimidation.
The arrest stems from the confrontation that occurred on Tuesday, June 23, when authorities accused the pastor of attacking the 20-year-old neighbor. Spell was booked on a charge of second-degree battery before later securing his release on bond.
Rather than remaining out of the public eye following his release, Spell immediately returned to Life Tabernacle Church, where he addressed the controversy directly from the pulpit and defended his response to what he described as serious threats against those closest to him.
Video circulating after the incident appears to show Pastor Spell walking toward the young man before quickly taking him to the ground. The footage then shows the pastor striking the man multiple times before tossing the man’s cellphone into the street.
Following the altercation, the 20-year-old was transported to a hospital for treatment. Reports indicate he suffered injuries that required stitches to his chin.
WATCH:
The incident has generated widespread attention online, with supporters arguing that any husband and grandfather confronted with violent threats against his family would react forcefully. Others contend that regardless of the allegations, the matter should have been handled through law enforcement rather than physical violence.
As the legal process moves forward, investigators are expected to examine both the assault allegations against Pastor Spell and the claims surrounding the alleged threats that preceded the confrontation. Whether additional evidence or witness testimony changes the course of the case remains to be seen, but the incident has already sparked heated debate over self-defense, public safety, and the limits of protecting one’s family.
