The battle over girls’ sports, locker rooms, and private spaces has entered a new phase, and this time the federal government is making it clear that noncompliance could come with a heavy price.
Four school districts in Kansas are now under intense pressure from President Donald Trump’s Department of Education after federal officials determined they were violating Title IX protections for female students. The districts have been given a short deadline to change course or risk losing access to federal education funding.
According to enforcement actions issued by the Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR), three Kansas districts—Olathe Public Schools, Shawnee Mission School District, and Topeka Public Schools—have been told they must come into compliance within 10 calendar days. Failure to do so could trigger referrals to the Department of Justice and potentially result in the loss of federal funds.
Meanwhile, Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools received what federal officials call a “Letter of Impasse,” signaling that negotiations have effectively broken down and enforcement measures may soon follow.
