In a heart-pounding moment that stunned drivers and pedestrians alike, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) helicopter touched down in the middle of a bustling California intersection last week — not for a high-stakes arrest or chase, but for something far more urgent and emotional: to save the life of a wounded K-9 officer.
It all unfolded on May 9 in La Mesa, California, when startled onlookers witnessed a Border Patrol chopper abruptly descend onto the busy crossroads of Grossmont Boulevard and Jackson Drive. As dust whipped around the spinning rotor blades, one agent leapt out, carrying a visibly injured German Shepherd in his arms.
“Boo was out there doing his job, tracking a group that crossed illegally, and unfortunately, he got bit by a rattlesnake,” explained Border Patrol agent Esteffany Solano.
The canine officer, known as Boo, had been deployed near the southern border, helping federal agents track illegal crossers — a job that has grown more dangerous amid growing chaos at the nation’s borders. His tracking efforts, however, ended in tragedy after a venomous encounter with a rattlesnake left him fighting for his life.
