Blue City Raises Somali Flag — Right Before July 4th

A flag-raising ceremony recognizing Somalia’s Independence Day has ignited a heated political debate in Columbus, Ohio, with many conservatives questioning why city leaders chose to honor another nation’s flag just days before Americans celebrate the Fourth of July.

The event, held in recognition of Somali Independence Day on July 1, commemorated the founding of the Republic of Somalia in 1960 following the unification of territories that had previously been under colonial administration. Columbus has long been home to one of the nation’s largest Somali-American communities, and city officials have marked the occasion in previous years through public ceremonies that included raising the Somali flag and illuminating City Hall in blue.

This year’s observance, however, quickly became the center of an online firestorm.
