President Donald Trump’s ambitious plan to extend his 2017 tax cuts and overhaul federal spending just cleared a major legislative hurdle Sunday night, reigniting hopes among conservatives that real fiscal reform may soon hit the House floor. The high-stakes bill, which failed a vote just days ago, was narrowly advanced by the House Budget Committee in a razor-thin 17-16 vote — held unusually on a Sunday evening.
In a tense, party-line standoff, four Republicans — Reps. Chip Roy (TX), Josh Brecheen (OK), Ralph Norman (SC), and Andrew Clyde (GA) — voted “present,” a strategic move that enabled the bill to advance without directly endorsing it. Though their votes didn’t block the bill, they sent a clear message: the GOP’s internal debate over spending priorities is far from over.
Committee Chairman Rep. Jodey Arrington (R-TX) acknowledged the ongoing friction within Republican ranks. “Deliberations continue to this very moment,” Arrington said late Sunday. “They will continue on into the week and, I suspect, right up until the time we put this big, beautiful bill on the floor of the House.”
Former President Trump was quick to celebrate the committee’s decision, posting on Truth Social, “CONGRATULATIONS REPUBLICANS!!! MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!!!”
