California Governor Gavin Newsom suffered a major courtroom defeat after the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 9th Circuit struck down a controversial state law aimed at Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. In a stunning development, the same liberal-leaning appeals court often criticized by conservatives ruled unanimously against Newsom’s latest attempt to interfere with federal immigration enforcement.
The decision marks yet another setback for Democrat leaders who have repeatedly tried to obstruct President Donald Trump’s border security agenda through state-level legislation.
Newsom’s Plan Targeted ICE Agents
Last year, Newsom signed two measures known as the No Vigilantes Act and the No Secret Police Act. Supporters claimed the laws were designed to increase transparency and accountability during immigration raids.
The legislation would have forced ICE agents to visibly identify themselves during operations while also prohibiting the use of masks or face coverings in the field.
