In East Boston’s Hispanic enclave, ICE officers apprehended a Brazilian national flagged with an Interpol Red Notice for armed robbery. Meanwhile, a Salvadoran man, charged locally with rape, was also taken into custody. Alarmingly, he had been released under Massachusetts’ sanctuary city policies despite the severity of his alleged crime.

The MS-13 gang’s growing influence in cities across America was also on full display. ICE agents arrested one member wanted on gun charges just a day after he was released by local law enforcement. His presence in the neighborhood was a stark reminder of the dangers posed to law-abiding residents. As officers led him away, one relieved neighbor shouted, “Thank you!”

ICE raids also resulted in the apprehension of individuals who were not the initial targets of the operation. Acting Boston ICE Field Office Director Patricia Hyde explained how one such “collateral” arrest occurred when agents found another illegal immigrant living with an MS-13 gang member.

“When we went to go find [the gang member], he was with somebody else who was previously removed from the United States,” Hyde said. “So he’s gonna go today, too.”

Hyde praised the day’s efforts, noting the significance of the arrests in enhancing public safety. “Today was a good day. Today we took several significant public safety threats out of our communities. Unfortunately, a lot were released by sanctuary city policies. But we’re here to tell the Commonwealth and the rest of the country that we’re gonna find them whether they’re released or not.”

The raids also targeted individuals with heinous records. One man arrested Wednesday had entered the U.S. through President Joe Biden’s controversial mass parole program. He was later charged with sexual assault. Another individual was apprehended after allegedly raping a woman while holding a gun to her head.

These cases highlight the ongoing challenges ICE faces in apprehending criminals who exploit sanctuary city policies to remain in the United States.

The fear of apprehension is reportedly driving some illegal immigrants to leave the U.S. voluntarily. According to immigration attorneys, a growing trend of “self-deportation” is emerging as individuals return to their home countries to avoid being exploited by human trafficking gangs in Mexico or facing arrest and deportation.

Under new leadership in Mexico, authorities have agreed to accept more non-Mexican deportees, intensifying concerns among illegal immigrants who fear being caught in the crossfire of criminal networks.

Wednesday’s raids serve as a stark reminder of the consequences of prioritizing politics over public safety. While ICE agents continue to uphold their duty to protect American communities, local sanctuary policies remain a significant barrier. As Hyde stated, ICE will not be deterred: “We’re gonna find them whether they’re released or not.”

The day’s arrests are a testament to the importance of enforcing immigration laws and addressing the threats posed by unchecked criminal activity. As the debate over sanctuary cities rages on, one thing is clear: America’s safety cannot be compromised.
