Former NFL Legend & Actor Passes at 84

Hollywood has lost another legend. John Amos, a former professional football player turned Emmy-nominated actor, passed away at the age of 84 on August 21 in Los Angeles. Known for his groundbreaking roles on television, particularly in the sitcom Good Times and the historic miniseries Roots, Amos leaves behind a legacy of talent, activism, and cultural impact.

His son, Kelly Christopher “K.C.” Amos, a film producer, and longtime publicist, Belinda Foster, confirmed his passing, revealing that Amos died of natural causes. In a heartfelt statement, his son shared, “It is with heartfelt sadness that I share with you that my father has transitioned. He was a man with the kindest heart and a heart of gold… and he was loved the world over. Many fans consider him their TV father. He lived a good life. His legacy will live on in his outstanding works in television and film as an actor.”

Born in Newark, New Jersey, on December 27, 1939, John Amos’s journey to fame was anything but conventional. Before stepping into the acting world, Amos was a professional football player. In 1964, he signed with the Denver Broncos in the American Football League (AFL). His football career, however, was cut short by a hamstring injury. Despite this setback, Amos persevered, playing for several teams in leagues like the United Football League and the Continental Football League, including stints with the Canton Bulldogs, Joliet Explorers, Norfolk Neptunes, and others.
