Ford has announced a recall of 412,774 Ford Explorer SUVs from model years 2017 through 2019. The reason? A rear suspension component known as a toe link can fracture without warning, instantly compromising steering control.

For families and police departments alike, that is not just a mechanical defect. It is a nightmare scenario unfolding at highway speeds.

She lost control of her Explorer while driving with her seven year old grandson in the back seat. The SUV fishtailed across a highway median. The child was so shaken that he later refused to ride alone with her again. What makes the story worse is that Ford had already recalled the vehicle for the same issue and assured the family it had been fixed.
