FBI Uncovers Alleged ISIS Attack Plot!

The allegations have raised renewed concerns about the threat posed by individuals allegedly inspired by foreign terrorist organizations and the importance of identifying potential attackers before they can carry out their plans.

FBI Operation Disrupts Alleged Attack Plot

According to CBS News, Mohamud allegedly posted a video online in September pledging allegiance to the Islamic State terrorist organization.

Investigators also allege that he sought to acquire an AK-47-style rifle and ammunition for the planned attack. The FBI reportedly arrested him at gunpoint after he purchased the firearm from a source working with the agency.

Minnesota U.S. Attorney Dan Rosen outlined the allegations during a news conference Wednesday, describing the case as an effort to stop a potential act of terrorism before lives were lost.

“The complaint charges Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud with acquiring an AK-47 assault rifle and 200 rounds of ammunition in order to commit a federal crime of terrorism, including attempting to provide material support to a designated foreign terrorist organization.”

Rosen emphasized that investigators were able to identify the alleged threat before the suspect could act on his stated intentions.

“Federal law enforcement is standing up to their calling to protect us,” he added. “Here, because of their vigilance and diligence, they were able to detect a threat and disrupt it before the defendant carried out his intention to kill, in his words, maybe 30 to 60 people.”

The alleged reference to killing as many as 60 people underscores the seriousness of the accusations. However, the claims remain allegations in a criminal case, and the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.

The Associated Press reported that Rosen identified Mohamud as an American citizen of Somali descent.

Investigators Describe Months of Communications

According to CBS News, the criminal complaint details an extended series of exchanges between Mohamud and a confidential human source.

“In the complaint, authorities say a ‘confidential human source’ exchanged ‘hundreds of bi-directional messages through multiple social media and encrypted messaging applications’ with Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud from December 2024 until Tuesday.

In those exchanges, Mohamud allegedly ‘expressed his desire to travel to Somalia’ to join al-Shabaab and ‘fight on its behalf and/or commit a mass casualty attack’ in Minnesota.”

The complaint reportedly states that Mohamud informed the source in July that he lacked the money needed to travel to Somalia. Authorities allege that he subsequently discussed carrying out a mass-casualty attack inside the United States instead.

According to the allegations, he described his intended domestic attack as being carried out “for the sake of Allah only.”

The reported communications are central to the investigation because they allegedly document the development of the suspect’s intentions over a period of months. Investigators appear to have used those exchanges, along with the attempted firearm acquisition, to identify and interrupt the alleged plot.

Mall of America Allegedly Targeted Over Jewish Ownership

The Mall of America, a major retail and entertainment destination in Bloomington, was reportedly selected for reasons outlined in the criminal complaint.

“The complaint says Mohamud said he wanted to attack the Mall of America ‘because it’s owned by Jewish.’ He said he was inspired in part by last year’s deadly antisemitic attack at Bondi Beach in Sydney, Australia,” according to CBS News.

If established in court, the alleged statements would point to antisemitic hostility as a potential motive behind the planned violence.

The reported reference to the Bondi Beach attack also raises questions about how violent incidents abroad can influence individuals considering attacks elsewhere. Investigators have not established guilt merely by documenting the alleged statements, but prosecutors are presenting the communications as part of their case.

The Mall of America attracts visitors from across Minnesota and beyond, making an attack during a public cultural celebration particularly concerning. Authorities allege that the planned date coincided with a Hmong Arts Celebration scheduled for October 24.

Arrest Comes Amid Reports of Violence in Minnesota Communities

The arrest also drew attention against the backdrop of separate reports of shootings in Minnesota.

Townhall’s Dustin Grage highlighted the arrest in a social media post while pointing to recent reports of Somali gang-related violence in communities not far from the shopping complex.

KSTP-TV in St. Paul reported three shooting incidents in recent days that were believed to be connected to Somali gang-related violence.

Those incidents are separate from the federal terrorism case involving Mohamud, and the available reporting does not establish a connection between the shootings and the alleged Mall of America plot. Nevertheless, the reports have added to public discussion about public safety in the surrounding communities.

The FBI’s arrest of Mohamud has prevented the alleged plan from proceeding as described by prosecutors, but the case will now move through the federal criminal justice system.

For investigators, the focus will be on the evidence supporting the allegations, including the reported communications, the firearm purchase, and the suspect’s alleged statements about his intentions.

For the public, the case serves as a reminder that threats against crowded public venues can involve lengthy investigations before authorities make an arrest.

Mohamud faces serious allegations involving terrorism and attempted support for a designated foreign terrorist organization. The coming legal proceedings will determine how the government’s evidence holds up in court and whether prosecutors can prove the charges beyond a reasonable doubt.
