House Speaker Mike Johnson is expressing confidence in Republicans’ chances of retaining control of Congress, arguing that concerns over the growth of socialism and communism could reshape the political battle ahead of the November midterm elections.
Johnson delivered that message while campaigning in Pennsylvania, where he joined Republican Rep. Rob Bresnahan in an effort to rally support ahead of one of the most closely watched congressional contests.
In an interview with The Daily Signal on Tuesday, Johnson suggested that the political climate could produce an outcome that defies the usual pattern of midterm elections, when the president’s party often loses congressional seats.
The Louisiana Republican pointed to the 2002 midterms as an example of how extraordinary circumstances can change the political equation.
