A source speaking to CNN reportedly described the effort in blunt terms, saying, “The Deep State firings have begun.”
That statement immediately ignited fierce debate across political circles, with critics characterizing the removals as politically motivated while supporters celebrated the moves as long-overdue reforms targeting unelected bureaucrats who have accumulated substantial power within federal agencies.
Additional details emerged Tuesday when CBS News reported that six political intelligence staffers were terminated while another 45 employees were reassigned back to their original agencies. The moves suggest a broader restructuring effort rather than isolated personnel decisions.
CNN separately reported that six political appointees who had been selected by Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard were among those dismissed. The reported firings have fueled speculation about the future direction of the intelligence community and the extent of the administration’s plans for reform.
Despite the controversy surrounding the personnel actions, Pulte projected confidence while highlighting the mission of the National Counterterrorism Center.
“Today, I spent time with the National Counterterrorism Center team, who is doing an incredible job protecting our Country under President Trump’s leadership. The room was filled with true professionals and American patriots. It is a privilege to work beside them,” Pulte said on Tuesday evening.
The statement appeared designed to reassure both the public and intelligence personnel that national security operations remain fully functional despite the dramatic staffing changes taking place behind the scenes.
Not everyone on Capitol Hill is convinced.
One of the loudest critics has been Republican Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina, who announced last year that he would not seek reelection. Tillis has frequently found himself at odds with many members of the MAGA movement and has often drawn criticism from conservative activists who view him as part of the Republican establishment.
Speaking to CNN’s Manu Raju on Tuesday, Tillis launched an extraordinary attack against Pulte, using unusually harsh language to describe the acting intelligence chief.
“My guess is, based on his past experience, it’s just going to be another hot-steamy pile of DOGE shit!” Tillis said.
The senator did not stop there.
“I think he’s an incompetent sycophant and not the right person to lead DNI, and you’re undermining” the next DNI, Tillis said.

The remarks instantly intensified an already heated dispute over the future of America’s intelligence agencies. Supporters of Pulte argue that the resistance from establishment figures only proves that meaningful reforms are finally taking place. Critics, meanwhile, contend that the personnel changes risk disrupting experienced intelligence operations.
As the firings continue and Washington insiders react, the confrontation between reform-minded officials and the entrenched bureaucracy appears far from over. With national security agencies undergoing significant changes and political tensions escalating, the battle over the future of the intelligence community is shaping up to be one of the most closely watched fights inside the Trump administration.
