A contentious debate erupted inside the Florida House as lawmakers voted to establish a day of remembrance honoring slain conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The proposal ultimately passed, but the discussion surrounding it exposed deep political divisions and sparked outrage after several Democratic lawmakers launched harsh attacks on Kirk’s legacy.

The measure, approved on Feb. 25 by an 82 to 31 vote largely along party lines, would formally recognize the late activist and free speech advocate who founded Turning Point USA. Kirk was assassinated on Sept. 10, a tragedy that shocked the conservative movement and prompted calls from supporters to memorialize his contributions to political discourse and youth engagement.
While Republicans largely supported the measure, several Democratic lawmakers used the debate to criticize Kirk in highly personal terms, igniting backlash from conservatives who say the comments crossed a line.
One of the most controversial remarks came from Democratic state Rep. Ashley Viola Gantt, who openly challenged the language used to describe Kirk’s death and argued he should not be honored by the state.
“He was not assassinated. And words being accurate matters. It was a death by gun violence,” Gantt said during the debate.
