Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer is attempting to cool down growing speculation about her political future, telling a local television audience this week that she has no plans to join what is expected to be a crowded race for the White House in 2028.
For years, Whitmer has been viewed as one of the Democratic Party’s most recognizable governors and a potential national contender. But during an interview Thursday, she suggested that her next chapter may look very different from another campaign trail.
The two-term Michigan governor, who will leave office because of term limits next year, said she is eager to step away from the nonstop demands of public office and take time to evaluate her future.
According to Whitmer, she has already sought advice from several high-profile political figures who have experienced life after government service. Among those she mentioned were former Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg, and former Republican House Speaker Paul Ryan.
Rather than immediately pursuing another elected position, Whitmer indicated she intends to slow down and consider her options.
