Court Hands Trump a Major Win on Deportations

A federal appellate court has delivered a significant legal win for the Trump administration, clearing the way for a broader use of fast-track deportations as part of its renewed immigration enforcement agenda.

In a closely divided 2–1 ruling, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit overturned a prior injunction that had prevented the Department of Homeland Security from expanding the use of expedited removal across the United States. The decision effectively restores the administration’s authority—at least for now—to accelerate deportation procedures for certain undocumented migrants.

The policy at the center of the dispute was expanded shortly after President Donald Trump returned to office in January 2025. Under the revised framework, immigration officers are permitted to place individuals into expedited removal proceedings if they are unable to demonstrate continuous residence in the country for at least two years. The change significantly broadens the category of individuals who may be subject to rapid deportation without a full immigration court hearing.
