It’s no secret that during his first term, President Trump faced relentless opposition—not just from Democrats, but from some Republicans too—when he sought to secure America’s southern border and construct a border wall. Despite overwhelming evidence that a barrier was necessary to stop illegal immigration and drug trafficking, opposition remained fierce and unyielding.
The refusal to support the wall has long raised questions about hidden motives. Why block a measure that clearly benefits American safety? Recent revelations suggest the reasons may be far darker than previously imagined.
In May 2016, then-Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi traveled to Mexico alongside several Congress members, including Texas Congressman Beto O’Rourke. Pelosi later described the meetings, but details remain unclear. Soon after, Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto faced serious accusations in court. He was alleged to have accepted a $100 million bribe from notorious drug cartel leader Joaquín “El Chapo” Guzmán.
Alex Cifuentes, a former close associate of Guzmán, testified in a New York courtroom that he had informed authorities about the bribe back in 2016. “Former Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto accepted a $100m (£77m) bribe from drug cartel kingpin Joaquín ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán, a witness has testified,” Cifuentes told the court.
