The legal battle surrounding longtime magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll and President Donald Trump has taken a new and unexpected turn, as the Department of Justice has reportedly opened a criminal investigation into Carroll herself.
According to multiple reports, federal investigators are now examining whether Carroll may have lied under oath during sworn testimony tied to her high-profile civil lawsuits against Trump. The focus of the probe centers on potential perjury allegations involving statements she made regarding outside financial support for her legal battles.
Carroll first came into the national spotlight in 2019 when she accused Donald Trump of raping her in a Bergdorf Goodman dressing room during the 1990s. However, her account drew scrutiny from critics after she was unable to provide a specific date or even the exact year the alleged incident occurred.
Over time, additional controversies surrounding Carroll’s past public remarks resurfaced. In earlier comments, she described “rape is sexy” and a “fantasy,” statements that drew widespread attention and backlash. During an interview with CNN host Anderson Cooper, the remarks were considered so disturbing that the broadcast abruptly cut to a commercial break.
