Even with Hollywood legend and lifelong car enthusiast Jay Leno backing it, California Democrats refused to give an inch when it came to easing regulations on classic car owners.
This week, the Democrat-controlled Assembly Appropriations Committee killed Senate Bill 712, better known as “Leno’s Law,” sponsored by Republican Sen. Shannon Grove. The bill aimed to protect California’s car culture by offering relief from the state’s increasingly burdensome smog regulations.
“SB 712, also known as ‘Leno’s Law,’ offers a practical solution for owners of collector vehicles that have difficulty complying with the state’s smog check law,” according to a fact sheet from Sen. Grove’s office.
The proposal, championed by Jay Leno himself, would have exempted classic vehicles—those at least 35 years old—from the state’s strict smog-check rules.
